As technology advances, so do the types of treatments that we get with regards to our skin. Many companies are releasing innovative products in the marketplace to best attract professionals to help them treat their patients. Microneedling has become a popular skin care treatment in recent years. I’ve covered micro needling and what it entails, but I haven’t covered the SkinPen. After you finish reading this article you might want to read my DermaPen review as well.
You’re likely curious what this interesting looking device is and how it works. Well, I can tell you that it involves needles and skin penetration, but don’t panic just yet. It’s certainly nothing that you need to worry about on a pain level.
What Is The SkinPen?
To describe it as simply as possible, the SkinPen is a handheld device that creates micro-channels along the surface of your skin. It’s a tool that literally looks like a pen. It’s about the size of a pen as well, maybe slightly larger than one and it’s a handheld device that people use to eliminate acne scars, improve the results driven through uses of topical products, and overall slowdown the aging process.
The SkinPen has twelve micro needles which are completely sterile and disposable, that helps create the channels on your skin. As you glide the pen on your skin, the micro-channels are created and they help increase collagen production as a result.
Does The SkinPen Hurt?
Most people have a misconception that the treatment is painful. For the average patient, it’s not painful at all. In fact, the depth of the needle penetration can be changed should the patient feel any discomfort or need further penetration.
The SkinPen is so sensitive that using it in your under eye region is both safe and quite common.
Some patients may instantly feel better as a result of using the SkinPen, but I’m not quite convinced that results are that quick. They feel good about themselves after getting the treatment and it’s likely to have a positive psychological effect on the patient.
One consumer mentioned that following her treatment with the SkinPen, her skin cleared up (which was previously ridden with acne) and even for a period of months, she didn’t have any pimples. She also mentioned seeing skin improvements in her orbital region, the lines around her mouth, and even color improvement from sun spots.
The SkinPen was most impactful from a smoothness perspective. What do I mean by this? Simple, her face was smoother than it ever has been and her once large pores were virtually unnoticeable.
The Company Behind The SkinPen
This handheld micro needling device what created by a company called Bellus Medical. They are based out of Dallas, TX. The company has created this product in an attempt to help patients replicate the results that a fractional laser treatment would produce with much less downtime. They’ve also eliminated the chances of getting burned or having pigmenting issues from using the product.
Most people that get the SkinPen Treatment end up happy that they’ve done so. At least, that’s what I’ve gathered based on my research. The company and product have been featured on a popular TV show called “The View.” Feel free to watch the video below to learn more about the product.
A dermatologist named Christy Bunyun of Plano, Texas explains why she’s decided to utilize this technology and offer it for her patients. Although she’s looking at it from a business perspective, it seems like patients really enjoy getting treatments with this product.
Is It Good For Acne Scars?
I haven’t personally received the treatment, but based on my research, I would have to confidently say that the SkinPen treatment isn’t necessarily harmful to acne scars. In fact, it may help reduce the visibility of the scars.
It would be in your best interest to ask your doctor their personal opinion before having the treatment done.

Based on my research, it seems as though many people have had a positive experience having SkinPen treatments done professionally on them. However, invasive or not, I strongly suggest that you do your own research to form an opinion on this company. Sometimes these treatments can get costly and undesired results can follow. Don’t just jump the gun and spend hundreds, even thousands on a treatment that might not work as well as desired. Instead, take a closer look at your skin condition and spend time evaluating the various options that are out there today.
