It’s almost summertime and some of you have less of a desire to exercise and more of a desire to drink alcohol then you’re going to pay the price for it. Your skin will have a price to pay for drinking too much alcohol as well. Some people think that it’s just those long nights or early mornings of hard boozing and little sleeping that cause problems to your skin. I’m here to tell you otherwise.
Why Skin Looks Horrible After Drinking All Night
We’re all in agreement that hangovers suck. Your body physically hates you for punishing yourself. After a hard night of drinking you get typical nausea, body aches, and pains, insane headaches, you know, the whole nine yards. Not too mention the regret of doing something or saying something stupid. It’s happened to the best of us. However, on top of all of that, your skin is not happy about your over indulgence in alcohol either.
The bad part about your skin not being happy is that it’s not afraid to show the world just how unhappy it really is. Understanding what goes on underneath your skin while you viciously consume alcohol is extremely important. Knowing the effect that multiple tequila shots can have on your skin may have you thinking twice about picking up the bottle again.
You must understand what booze does to your skin. The folks over at GQ Magazine sat down with a dermatologist to discuss all of this. They met with Dr. Terrence Keaney, M.D. to find out what type of impact drinking may have on your skin. Well, according to Dr. Keaney, he claims that “Transient flushing is a common side effect of drinking,” and this flushing isn’t something that’s very good for your skin. This is was gives many individuals that “red face” that they often get. This is often what happens to individuals that are allergic to alcohol. Consuming just a small amount of alcohol can cause issues to arise. But that’s just part of the reason why you look like crap after spending all night hitting the bottle.
The other part of the equation is directly related to what is known as, “edema.” Dr.Keaney explained it to the individuals at GQ stating, “Since alcohol promotes the loss of water in urine, sodium and other electrolytes are retained in the body. To combat the dehydration, the body will compensate by retaining water, which results in enlarged blood vessels and bloating.” Basically, what Dr.Keaney is trying to say is that you look like crap because your body is retaining fluid and it’s trying to overcompensate for all that fluid that you lost while hitting the stall 15 times to go to the bathroom.
The only real solution to this is to simply lower your alcohol intake. Quite frankly, the best solution would be to eliminate alcohol completely and you won’t have any issues. If you decide you want to drink, you should try and keep your drinking to no more than a couple per day. Another thing that you should do is limit the amount of sodium that you consume. It will cause you to swell more. Stay away from that god awful hangover food too. Lastly, if you’re hungover, don’t go to the gym and certainly don’t try and spend all day in the sun. You’re not doing your skin anymore favors by doing so.
As a last resort, you are going to want to get your hands on some high-quality eye cream and moisturizer to help you both look and feel better.
