Azelaic Acid

I’m going to shed some light on an organic compound called azelaic acid. It comes in various forms such as gel as well as foam. It’s a well know antiseptic that’s topically applied.

From a chemical perspective, it’s a dicarboxylic acid derived from wheat. The compound is an anti acne that typically is used to treat rosacea.

What Is It And Should You Use Azelaic Acid?

The compound is not only anti acne but also anti bacterial as well as something known as keratolytic. For those unfamiliar with the term all that means is that if an abnormal skin growth is present, it helps bring the skin back to a normal state. All those properties make it a great candidate for clearing up any areas that are riddled with bacteria and acne outbreaks.

There was a study that was conducted on the skin lightening effects of using azelaic acid cream and within 24 weeks of use, more than 50% of the individuals within the study saw positive results.

Some people feel as though this compound is much safer that using products containing hydroquinone. It’s because products that contain hydroquinone can cause irritation and sensitivity.

There are also some studies stating that using azelaic acid reduces inflammation, flushing, the presence of lesions and other things that happen in patients with rosacea.

Medicine Strengths

You can get this in a prescription strength product containing 20% azelaic acid. The product is called Azelex. Of course, you can also get this compound in other the counter products in many creams, lotions, toners, masks, and other types of products.

What Are The Side Effects?

There are some side effects to look out for when using this compound. You may find that you feel some stinging, burning, itching, and even a little bit of tingling. The symptoms typically resolve after a few weeks. You’ll also find that the side effects happen less frequently than with most acne prescription meds.

Interested in finding a few OTC products that contain this compound, all you need to do is check out some of the azelaic acid cream reviews that have been posted on the Internet. Some brands that make products containing azelaic acid cream are La Roche, Murad, Derma E, The Ordinary, Rodial, and more.
