I typically don’t spend too much time discussing the topic of hand washing. It’s one of those things that we often just assume is extremely important. We know that the act of washing hands helps tremendously in terms of preventing a number of diseases. If you didn’t know that, you do now. You need to know more though, which is why I’m going to share some hand washing facts with you today. These facts will hopefully give you a better indication of just how important the simple act of washing your hands for 15 seconds really is. It can make the world of a difference when it comes to your health.
Some Hand Washing Facts Everyone Needs To Know
How’s this for a fact, did you know that 8 out of 10 infections have been confirmed to be transmitted through touching? Disgusting huh? I know it is but it’s absolutely true. If an individual has the flu, that flu can be transmitted to literally hundreds of people just by touching them. If you want to prevent from getting the flu then you must wash your hands, a lot!
Washing your hands with soap doesn’t completely destroy all viruses. However, it has a positive impact on the viral count if you do wash your hands regularly. You just need to make sure you do so correctly. The good news is that the virus left on your hands after washing won’t likely be enough to infect you or other individuals you come in contact with.
Hand Washing After Toilet Time
Ever wondered how many people wash their hands after using the restroom? If you use the restroom then you absolutely need to wash your hands. It’s an absolute necessity after using the toilet. Germs which can be picked up after using the toilet contain harmful bacteria which can cause one to develop diseases. Yes, you can also transfer those diseases to other people if you don’t wash your hands.
Let me break things down even further for you. A recent study that involved 80,000 individuals location in five cities across the United States showed that only 67% of individuals actually washed their hands after going to the bathroom. New York had the smallest number of people that actually washed their hands after using the bathroom. Of those that participated in the study individuals from Chicago were 83% more likely to wash their hands after using the toilet.
Hand Washing Guidelines
Roughly, about 70% of the population in the United States are familiar with hand washing guidelines and they take measures to try and follow them. However, the percentage of individuals strictly adhering to the guidelines really depends on the environment they are in. The more congested and crowded, the less compliant people seem to be.
How Long Must Wash Your Hands?
The Mayo clinic recommends that you wash your hands for a minimum of 20 seconds. However, that may not even be long enough if you really want to eliminate the number of bacteria that exist on your hand. For example, washing your hands for just 10 seconds longer can reduce the bacteria that remains by an astonishing ten times. That’s a huge reduction. If you want to up the ante then I suggest using a hand sanitizer gel of some sort to really take things even further.
Most people think that water temperature matters. However, there are no real studies that show that temperature has any real impact on things. People often think that if they wash with hot water alone that will do the trick. Wrong! In fact, it may cause dermatitis. Washing with cold water is actually better for your skin because it causes far less damage.
Bacteria On Your Hands
Bacteria resides on your hands in two separate layers. The first layer is transient flora and the second layer is called resident flora. Transient flora exists superficially. It does not reside on your skin in any type of permanent fashion. However, transient flora is more dangerous and infection that resident flora. Resident flora exists in the deeper layers of your skin and it is not easily removed. Even if you try cleaning profusely, it doesn’t go away that easy.
Now that you know a few important hand washing facts, I think it’s important that you spend time incorporating some proper hand washing etiquette into your routine. If you don’t wash your hands then you are doing your skin an injustice!
