UV damage fighting foods

Foods That Protect Your Skin From UV Damage

The key here is to do your best to load up on foods that are antioxidant rich and that can provide a ton of nutrients in small portions of food. These foods listed below will do wonders for your body and can help you protect against crazy harmful UV rays.

Tomatoes

Juicy tomatoes spend all day baking in the hot sun. They can withstand almost any temperature and they are the one food that doesn’t shrivel up after being exposed to the sun for too long. Why are tomatoes able to fight off nasty UV rays? Well, it’s because they are jam packed with carotenoids and polyphenols. Both of which are considered to be super antioxidants. These antioxidants protect chlorophyll from getting photo damage. In other words, they help prevent from getting a sunburn.

What you probably didn’t know was that antioxidants do the same thing for your skin. All red fruits and vegetables contain a powerful antioxidant called lycopene. This is known to help protect your skin from UV rays as well. If you really want to get the most possible you’ll want to consume tomato paste. It contains the most lycopene out of all of them.

Green Tea

Believe it or not, green tea is a UV fighting food that can also protect your skin. According to a study that was recently done. Green tea can reduce your chances of getting a sunburn if applied directly to the skin at least 30 minutes before exposing yourself to the sun. Drinking green tea twice a day can help reverse sun damage as well. I suggest you put down the coffee and start drinking tea.

Eggs

You probably didn’t know that eggs are a powerful free radical fighting food. They too contain a high amount of antioxidants and believe it or not, eating organic eggs has been known to increase the quality of your skin by 20% should you consume two organic eggs per day for a week.

Chocolate

If you’ve got a sweet tooth then you’re going to love this one! If you consume cocoa with a high concentration of flavonoids, then you’re you may be protecting your skin from sun damage without even knowing it. Whatever you do, you need to consume chocolate that contains a high amount of raw cocoa. Any chocolate won’t do. The other thing I should mention is that it’s very high in calories. That said, I’m not giving you a free pass to eat whatever amount of chocolate you want, don’t get any ideas!

Red Wine

I typically don’t encourage mixing drinking with sun, however, if you’re going to spend all day in the sun, then you might want to pick up a glass of red wine. Red wine contains polyphenol which protects your skin from UV¬†damage. Red wine may even be able to protect your skin from sun damage even if you’ve spent all day in the hot sun. The polyphenols are in the skin of the grapes.

Well, I’ve just given you a few wonderful reasons why you should consume a few delicious foods. Some of which may even be considered treats. I urge you to step your UV protection game up by consuming more of each. You definitely don’t want sun damage on your skin.¬† However, it’s important to remember not to over indulge. Too much of anything can be considered a bad thing!
