Essential Oils are super hot right now. Go to any natural store and you’ll notice them literally flying off the shelves! No, but seriously, they are extremely popular today. Now that we’ve gotten that over with, I want to talk about something that you may or may not have noticed while reading the labels of your products. Have you ever noticed that some product ingredients contain the word “extract” on them?

My guess is that you’re heading to your cabinet or purse now to take a closer look at the products. Before you do that, stop and ask yourself a quick question, do you really know what the difference is between essential oils and extracts?

Do they do the same thing? They sure do smell similar and they have a similar texture as well, but are they alike or different?

What You Must Know About Extracts and Essential Oils

The truth is that although many people think that these are the same types of ingredients, they really are different. I’ll give you a quick lesson on each of them based on a little research that I’ve done lately.
Essential oils are concentrated amounts of a plant which has been gathered via a distilling process. They are typically distilled through the use of steam.

Extracts are not distilled. They’re actually more of an infusion. Think of the process being very similar to making a nice hot cup of tea, using water as the method of extracting the steeps from the bag.

So, what that essentially means is that essential oils are definitely a stronger, purer and definitely more potent that and extract, which is a diluted version.

Your next question is likely whether or not they have the same effect or impact on your skin. The answer to that question is a resounding no! These ingredients do not have the same impact on your skin.

While essential oils can have more of an impact on your skin, they’re often much stronger and require being diluted prior to being included in a formula. If you’re looking for a natural product that acts as an anti-fungal, antiviral, and an antibacterial then chances are you’ll be looking for something that contains essential oils. The results will be better if you use those containing essential oils versus extracts because they’re known for having such properties versus the extracts.

Should you only use products containing essential oils? No, that would be quite foolish. Many products containing extracts do a fine job at keeping your skin looking healthy and blemish free.

I think the lesson to be learned here is that regardless of what you’re using, it’s important to know what it is that you’re using and how it can impact your skin. Know what you’re ingesting or don’t use it at all. That said, not taking action is a very bad idea.

Now, what products contain essential oils today that you can begin to incorporate immediately? Well, I’d first suggest reading this page as it talks about the increase in popularity of essential oil use and anti aging products. If you wish to skip that and go right for a useful essential oil, then definitely read up on the lavender oil because there are plenty of benefits of using it.
