While they certainly help improve the condition of your teeth, over time things can get worse in terms of the condition of your skin. In fact, regular use can lead to the condition alone.
It’s not necessarily the chemical itself but the frequency of contact that causes the issue. See, you’re essentially exposing yourself to chemicals twice a day at a minimum (assuming you brush your teeth like a normal person) and it can lead to issues such as redness, irritation, dryness and even inflammation. Some people have developed a condition that leaves red blotchy patches of skin on their face.
Another common cause of this condition is due to individuals being allergic to certain chemicals. It can happen when you come in contact with food or skin products that you have chemicals you’re highly allergic to. As a result, the dry skin around mouth forms along with red spots on your skin.
Yes, it’s true that certain infections can lead to dry skin around the mouth. It’s not very common, but it’s possible and when it does occur, the condition is often a result of getting an infection from a fungus or a bacteria that you’ve come in contact with. This typically occurs when your skin around your mouth is already at risk due to being dry or having a weak skin barrier. This makes it that much easier for fungi as well as bacteria to get into your skin and impact things. Also, what most people don’t understand, licking your lips can drastically increase your chances of your skin coming in contact with bacteria and fungi. Instead of doing that, buy some chap stick with SPF and use that anytime you have the urge to lick your lips. It will make a world of difference!
We know that both infection and chemical exposure can lead to dry skin around mouth, but there’s one more factor that I want to bring to your attention, environmental factors! One major environmental factor in this condition is the weather. Whenever you’re subjected to a condition where there’s a strong decrease in humidity, it can often lead to the development of this condition. This is why people tend to develop this during the cold winter months. As humidity drops and moisture is no longer present in the air, it then becomes a real problem. Not to mention, people crank the heat up in their apartments and houses which have a serious impact on things as well.
Also related to the environment is food consumption. If you think about the sky around your mouth as being the environment, when you introduce food, it can have a negative impact on things. Licking food off of your lips or off the corners of your mouth can be a real issue and yes, it causes dry skin to form. Instead, be polite and eat like you should, using a napkin to wipe your mouth.
Treating Your Dry Skin
As with many skin conditions, you can’t just begin treating it without having a strong understanding of the main cause. Just like any other condition, you’ll need to evaluate the situation and identify whether it’s environment driven, chemical-driven, or due to an infection. For example, assuming that you have dry skin around the mouth due to some environmental issue, then you may want to attempt to first adjust your environment. In addition to that, you’ll want to begin using a moisturizer of some sort.
