Lots of people have been talking about this topic for years. There are plenty of people in this world that avoid spicy foods completely and they do so because they think it causes acne to form. Do they know what they’re talking about?
There are lots of people that breakout as a reaction to consuming certain foods. Many people tend to develop acne when eating foods with gluten in them, dairy, nuts and even sugars.
Guess what, spicy foods might also be one of those things that cause issues with your skin.
Is Spicy Food A Reason Why Some People Get Acne?
People have been known to develop a skin condition known as rosacea when they consume spicy foods. However, this isn’t the same as developing acne. It’s a completely different condition.
Even though we don’t have hard evidence to support the fact that spicy foods cause people to develop acne, the number of individuals that tend to mention this seems to be very high.
However, what might be the real reason you develop acne isn’t the spicy food but whatever else you’re consuming along with that spicy food.
Let me help you better understand things here. Take a second to think about the last time you ate something really spicy. Chances are that you were consuming a soft drink of some kind while doing so or perhaps you were drinking milk to cut down on the heat of the food? My point is simple, more often than not, when consuming spicy foods, we tend to also consume foods that contain sugar.
Let me try and provide you with another example that you can use to better understand things. I’m pretty much convinced that every time you consume something spicy, you’re also consuming foods that could aggravate your skin and cause acne to form. Let’s take an American classic that’s consumed during football season regularly. I’m talking about buffalo wings!
I’m sure that you likely forgot that buffalo wings contain dairy in them. The milk batter that gets deep fried is filled with dairy. Now, dairy can cause acne breakouts to happen and they are one of the main reasons why people get them so often. It all has to do with the hormones in the milk (androgen) and how they cause sebum to be produced in excess quantity.
When this happens, your pores become clogged and bacteria gathers. As a result, acne forms rather quickly.
Back to the spicy foods, most spicy dishes contain tomatoes and they have what’s known as glycoalkaloids in them. Tomatoes contain these specific alkaloids and they use it as a defense mechanism to protect themselves from pest damage. Glycoalkaloids can easily irritate some individuals skin if they consume it.
So, it’s not necessarily just the spicy foods but also those used in combination with them to create a delicious dish that will have you running to the dermatologist.
How Your Body Reacts To Spicy Foods
Think of your internal organs as being a giant filter, specifically your digestive system. As you consume food, your digestive tract carefully works hard to help filter any toxins that might be harmful to your body. Your digestive tract does this to ensure that your body doesn’t enter too toxic of a state.
Sometimes, your body needs a way release and get rid of those toxins. Eating spicy foods on a regular basis can make it more difficult for your body to filter out those toxins. Instead, those toxins end up on the surface of your skin.
One other thing often happens when we eat spicy foods. It’s quite common for us to sweat after crushing a bunch of hot peppers. Eating spicy foods raises the temperature in your body. When this happens, your body naturally wants to cool down and in order to accomplish this task, you begin to sweat. As you know, sweating can make you breakout.
The more spicy foods you eat, the more you sweat. The more you sweat, the more common it is for your pores to become clogged. Not too mention, the longer that sweat sits on your skin, the more chances that bacteria will begin to form on the surface of your skin.
What Can You Do?
Assuming that you do not wish to cut out spicy foods completely from your diet there are a couple of things that you can do. What you should start with is simply keeping a journal of foods that you eat daily. Make note of everything that you consume down to the smallest ingredient possible. You can then evaluate your condition and see how your skin reacts to each meal.
For example, if you eat anything spicy, be sure to think about the specific ingredients that the food contained.
I strongly suggest carrying this diary around with you or even using your iPhone notes section to keep track of what you eat. Since I’m highly allergic to certain foods, I do this anyway. It helps me determine which foods are causing the most trouble in terms of acne breakouts and inflammation related to allergies in general.
You’re not going to like hearing this but I’d also like to suggest that you simply avoid eating spicy foods for a while. Use fewer spices when cooking as well. If you are using too many spices, then you’re only hurting yourself. Sure, the food may taste good but it’s not helping your skin.
Lastly, if you’re the type the sweats a lot while eating spicy foods, then be sure to gently pat the sweat from your face while eating. Make sure the paper towel or cloth that you’re using is completely clean and free from bacteria.
Final Verdict: Does Spicy Food Really Cause Acne?
This old myth is nothing but that. It’s not the spicy food alone that seems to cause people to break out with bad acne. Instead, it’s the complimentary ingredients and effects of consuming spicy foods in general, that cause issues.
If you’re eating foods with lots of dairy and sugars in them, then you might find yourself having to deal with acne, simple as that.
Play it safe and avoid any foods that typically trigger acne breakouts and you should be just fine.
