With many of the state regulations changing, lots of people have been wondering if smoking weed causes acne. People are recreationally and medicinally smoking weed more frequently than usual today. Some people do it to destress while others do it to just relax. While I don’t personally participate in this type of activity nor do I condone it, I can certainly accept it from a societal point of view.
Bad news for marijuana lovers, smoking weed has actually been known to cause zits and breakouts in many individuals. I’m going to cover the basics of weed in general then get deeper into protecting your skin if you want to prevent breakouts while hitting your bong.
NOTE: Once again, please note that I personally do not smoke weed and cannot advise that anyone start doing so. Drugs are bad and even though weed aka marijuana is a natural drug, it may be best to avoid it in general. However, consumption is a personal choice.
Marijuana and Pimples: Does Weed Cause Acne Breakouts?
Let’s start by covering what weed is exactly. Weed is a slang term for marijuana and it comes from the cannabis plant. There are many different compounds of that exist in weed. However, there are only a few that I’ll be covering today.
The three compounds that we’re cover are Tetrahydrocannabinol aka THC, Tetrahydrocannabinol Acid aka THCA, and Cannabidiol aka CBD. The first compound is what makes you feel extremely relaxed when you smoke it. The THC is essentially created when drying weed and heating it.
THCA is the compound that hasn’t converted to THC quite yet. This can be found in weed before it’s smoked. This compound is known to have anti-inflammatory properties.
The last compound is known as CBD and this helps those that are looking to fight nausea, psychosis, and anxiety. It’s also the compound that’s commonly used in skin products trending the market today. The CBD oil can be great for your skin and I’ve actually reviewed one of the brands on the market today.
So, now that you have a better idea how weed and skin are connected, it’s time to further connect the dots on how weed causes acne. Put it this way, it has to do with two simple things: testosterone and THC.
Smoking weed makes you feel “high” and it’s the THC in weed that causes that so-called “high.” Another thing that smoking weed does is increase your testosterone levels. As testosterone levels increase, so does the amount sebum your body produces. All that extra sebum production can clog your skin and as a result, you begin to breakout. So, as you can see, smoking weed doesn’t directly cause acne but doing so causes hormone changes and that’s why you commonly break out with zits. It’s the increase in testosterone levels that are the main problem.
That’s not all, though…
Smoke, in general, is bad for your collagen. Smoking weed can reduce your collagen production levels. The reason this happens is due to the presence of a chemical compound known as hydrocarbons (which are basically carbon and hydrogen). These chemicals slowly penetrate smokers skin and as a result, it becomes irritated.
Low collagen simply causes your skin to heal slower and as a result, scarring often occurs.
Smoking weed indirectly causes acne through both poor nutrition and immune deficiency. Here’s how it all happens. Smoking weed can cause a vitamin D deficiency to form. This can cause blemishes to form. It can also cause acne psoriasis to form as well as aging.
It’s also common for your immune system to become suppressed the more you smoke. Cannabinoid commonly causes the suppression. Weak immune systems aren’t able to fight off basic infections that commonly cause acne to form.
So Does Weed Cause Acne And Should You Stop Smoking It?
Well, I’m not going to tell you to smoke it period, but if you’re already smoking weed, then you should stop because it’s not great for your skin or acne. Weed doesn’t cause acne to form, but it’s the method in which you ingest it that causes most issues with your skin.
The Bottom Line – Smoking Weed Does Cause Zits
Smoking weed can and will cause acne to form. It’s something that you can avoid completely if you put forth enough effort. Instead of smoking it, you can orally ingest the weed or apply it as a topical. However, if you want to lower your chances of getting acne then avoid it completely.
