Does Fish Oil Cause Acne Or Cure It?

Want to know what causes huge disagreements between people? A simple conversation on fish oil. Some say that this popular health supplement is awesome. Others claim that this causes them to break out like never before.

Fish oil is used by people battling ADHD, joint issues, diabetes, and more. However, as soon as the acne topic surfaces, some people tend to change their tune, well, at least those that have conflicting opinions on this so-called miracle supplement.

A group of individuals believes that fish oil has been one of the main reasons why their acne has improved. However, some (women specifically) have said that it made their acne much worse. I’m sure your head is spinning right now and you’re wondering whether or not you should take fish oils. Before you make a choice, read this article to learn more.

Does Fish Oil Cause Acne?Fish Oil Facts And Acne Breakouts

Let’s kick things off by discussing where fish oil comes from. For starters, fish oil comes from fish that are fatty. Species such as salmon, tuna, and even cod. Most consumers today are buying fish oil in capsule form, but some prefer the liquid. I personally can’t stomach the liquid form.

Based on some of the research, this oil contains omega-3s which are commonly known as fatty acids. These are responsible for helping improve the health and physical quality of individuals, claiming that acne is one of those things.

Does It Prevent Breakouts?

One thing you need to understand is that consuming fish oils or any omega-3 supplements will not help kill any bacteria on your skin that causes acne to form. Another thing that it won’t do is help you physically remove or reduce the dark in acne spots that exist on your face.

You’re probably wondering, what can it do then? Well, it can supposedly help control hormones. This is good news for women, especially those that suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

There have been studies published that discuss the positive impact that fish oils have on reducing androgen hormone levels. This is a plus if you’re suffering from hormone driven acne breakouts.

When testosterone levels increase as well as androgen levels, it can cause excessive sebum to be produced. This isn’t a good thing because as you know, sebum production has been directly linked to clogged pores and breakouts.

What Is Omega 6?

We’ve mainly been focusing on Omega-3s but we mustn’t forget about omega 6 fatty acids. This type is basically the opposite of omega-3s. When you have an overabundance of omega-6s it typically means that your omega 3 levels are lower than they should be. As a result, you might develop acne or perhaps have done so already.

How It Causes Breakouts

Ever heard the saying, “Too much of a good thing can be bad,” well, in this case, that’s exactly what we’re dealing with. While your body needs omega-3s, if you have too much of this in your system, it can be bad for you.

Having too many omega 3s and omega 6s in your system may cause oxidation issues. When this happens, free radical damage is often the result.

If you’ve read some of the other articles I’ve written, you’d know that I’m a strong advocate for krill oil, which actually has an even shorter oxidation period than fish oil. However, I think it’s better for your skin and body. That’s just my personal opinion, though.

If you’re looking to try that supplement out, I suggest you take a look at this brand. They’re what I’d consider the leaders in that space.

Anyway, I digress…

The bottom line is that you want to take a balanced amount of fish oil (omega-3s and omega-6s) if you want to best avoid oxidation and further stress on your cells.

Should You Start Taking This Supplement?

My guess is that you may have acne or even worse, you might be suffering from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, in which case, I’d highly suggest that you start taking fish oils daily. If you do have severe acne, then incorporating an inexpensive fish oil supplement may be just what you need to clear things up.

I’m not saying that you’ll without a doubt see 100% better results, but there’s a good chance it will improve your condition.

Now, there is another option that you can look into doing and that’s reducing your omega-6s. You should evaluate your diet and determine whether or not your consuming foods that contain lots of omega 6s. If you’re consuming processed foods, grapeseed oil, walnut oil, and basic salad dressings, then you need cut them out immediately or reduce your intake.

Does Eating Fish Help?

That all depends on your condition. Assuming that you’re in an omega 3 deficit, then consuming fatty fish may be able to help a little bit but there are some safety warnings that you should be aware of when consuming too much fish. Fatty fish often has mercury in it. This can actually be poisonous to your body.

A better idea would be to head to the local GNC or Vitamin Shoppe to pick up a bottle of fish oil capsules. They will be more potent, likely fresh and your risk of toxic levels increasing will be far less.

Choosing The Right Supplement

I’m no expert here, so I suggest you ask a store associate for help. I can give you some pointers but nothing too extensive. Here are some things that you’ll want to do before making any purchasing decisions. First, be sure to read the labels. If you have any questions about the fish oils, then you need to ask. Look for signs that the supplements have been tested at third-party laboratory facilities.

The next thing you’ll want to do is buy fish oils that are packaged in dark bottles. The light can reduce the life of the supplement.

Find something that delivers a minimum of 500mg of omega-3 per serving. That’s the amount that I tend to go for when shopping for fish oils.

Last but not least, keep it pure. You want to find supplements that are pure and not some proprietary mixture that contains a ton of other ingredients. Stick to the basics when it comes to fish oils.

So Does It Truly Cause Acne?

In conclusion, I’d like to say that yes fish oils can cause acne when taken incorrectly. Too much of a good thing can be bad for your skin. and overall health.

On the flip side of that, if you have issues with hormones being imbalanced, then give this supplement a shot and you might clear up your skin in no time. You’ll never know until you make the effort to just do it.
