Are you a DIY fan? How about an all-natural fan? Great news then, you’ve perhaps just stumbled across the most widely used 100% natural solution for repairing your skin. Yes, I’m talking about the oatmeal face mask.
If you’re in the market for something that can repair, hydrate, cleanse and more then you’ve found something that might fit your needs. Oatmeal face masks are viable solutions for those that like to keep it as environmentally friendly as possible. I’ll fill you in on what these masks are made of, how they can help improve your skin and what typical ingredients are best combined with the main ingredient of attraction, good old fashioned Quaker oats!
If you are scratching your head wondering how this facial mask works and why someone would want to apply it to their skin then you’re not the only one. In fact, there are many people out there that have never heard of this face mask and the technique of using oatmeal on their skin is extremely unfamiliar.
Facts About Oatmeal Face Masks
I already mentioned this but it’s a known fact that these masks are made from the same oatmeal that you eat for breakfast every single morning. Some people take the masks one step further and incorporate other natural ingredients.
The reason they do so is due to the positive impact that the masks have on your skin without having to deal with anything too invasive or harsh. Most commercial products can do a number on your skin and can even make your skin worse if not properly applied. That’s why I typically advise that you try this before going for any acidic harsh peel or chemical mask.
If you’re the type that has uber sensitive skin then I suggest trying an oatmeal face mask over anything else. For example, let’s assume that you have significant acne problems or that it gets really inflamed, then you may want to use this versus another type of facial skin care mask. As for the specific type of oatmeal and brand, there are plenty of options that exist at your local supermarket. However, I suggest using Quaker Oats brand Old Fashioned Oats.
Why You Should Use An Oatmeal Mask
As previously stated, most commercial grade masks contain chemicals and ingredients that might be harmful to your skin. Not that the use of lactic acids and alpha hydroxy acids are terrible, but they can do a number on your skin if you’re sensitive. Using an oatmeal face mask completely eliminates the sensitive scare from the equation. That is, assuming that you’re not allergic to oatmeal!
So long as your not allergic to oatmeal, then I can safely say that this nutrient-packed natural mask will provide your skin with an overabundance of amino acids, vitamins, and minerals! All of which are 100% essential if you want nice and healthy looking skin. What happens is when you apply the mask, all those amino acids and vitamins are soaked up by your skin, allowing it to replenish and repair itself.
Another reason that you should use an oatmeal mask on your face is because it can really hydrate your skin. See, oatmeal helps your skin retain moisture once the skin has been treated with the ingredient. This humectant is also a low risk when it comes to side effects. Chances are you’re not going to find yourself suffering from too many side effects after applying a homemade oatmeal mask. It’s hypoallergenic and won’t cause any issues (for the most part).
Types of Masks
There are quite a few different types of oatmeal masks that you can use. In fact, you can even purchase these masks made of 100% natural and pure oatmeal. Another option is to purchase a mask that contains natural additives such as avocado, honey, yogurt, egg whites and more.
There are ready-made mask options that you can find available for purchase at local health stores as well as online. Many of the masks for purchase are made from all-natural 100% pure raw oatmeal. Others might be made from pre-cooked oatmeal. I personally suggest that you purchase a mask that has raw oatmeal versus cooked. Reason being, it will be a bit rougher and will likely exfoliate better.
When shopping for oats, be on the lookout for colloidal oatmeal. This just means that the oatmeal is fine and suspended in some sort of fluid. It helps with the absorption and is considered to be better for sensitive skin. In terms of length of effectiveness, if you decide to apply an oatmeal face mask that has been made with colloidal oatmeal, then it most likely will protect your skin for at least a few days.
How To Use It
Before you begin to apply your oatmeal face mask, you must thoroughly wash your face with a cleanser and lukewarm water. Use a soft towel to pat your face dry. The next step is to apply the oatmeal mask evenly to your face. Put forth best efforts to avoid any eye contact.
Leave the mask on your face for about 10-15 minutes, allowing it to dry completely, then simply rinse the mask off. If you’re using a mask that you’ve purchased, be sure to read the directions carefully and follow the instructions exactly. Leaving the mask on longer than recommended will not help and may in fact cause more damage to your skin.
If you’re skeptical or nervous about doing any oatmeal mask treatment then you should speak with your dermatologist about it. Don’t do anything that you’re not comfortable with doing when it comes to your skin. Sometimes less is more when treating damaged skin.
