There are a lot of things that I care about when it comes to my skin, but this issue has to be one of the most important of them all. The issue I’m referring to is ashen elbows also known as ashy elbows. I wasn’t even sure why the term “ashen” is used so much and didn’t discover it until diving into my research. Nevertheless, it’s an awful look.

How To Deal With Ashy Elbows

No matter what skin type you may have, there are some common spots on your body that are prone to drying and cracking. There’s really no avoiding it, just preventing it with the knowledge of it likely occurring if no action is taken. This drying and cracking are most pronounced on the skin on your elbows. It can be very unpleasant, annoying, and honestly, pretty ugly to look at. Not to mention embarrassing. I’m not going to lie, when I see someone with “ashy” skin I typically think they don’t care for themselves as best as they should.

Sure, get mad at me for that if you must. That’s the honest to god truth though and I’m not hiding or shy about it.

The worst part, no matter how much you scrub those pesky elbows of yours with your trusty loofah, they still don’t look good. Reasons People Get Ashy Elbows

Just like any other condition, there are many reasons why people’s skin gets ashy. It happens and if you’re like me, then you want to get rid of it or prevent it from becoming an issue. We must start with the reason it happens.

The skin located on and around the elbow is very thick, as it needs to stretch and contract to accommodate the stretching of the arm. That means that the skin is typically much thicker than skin located in other areas of the body. The problem is that thicker skin is more prone to drying and cracking. This is almost mostly commonly due to improper hydration. Also, let’s not forget the environmental factors and the inevitable genetic predispositions to dry skin. They are all issues and common factors to consider.

If you live in an area with a rather dry climate or in some of the colder geographical regions, then your skin likely suffers from a lack of moisture. That in itself causes your skin to dry out. The elbows suffer a lot as they are frequently over-exposed to the elements but most often overlooked when applying hydrating creams to the skin. I don’t care whether its water-based or oil-based, applying something is better than nothing! In some cases, for people with psoriasis, the skin on the elbow suffers the most, as most psoriasis rashes develop right here. Talk about embarrassing!

Most of us usually exfoliate once or twice a week, maybe less. But there are parts of the body that are in need of more frequent exfoliation, like the soles on our feet and the skin on the elbows. Even if you don’t exfoliate your whole body, you should use a gentle scrub to exfoliate the skin on the elbows about three times a week. Doing so will help remove the buildup of dead skin cells, making it easier to deliver the hydration they need to repair.

Cool Showers

Well, a cool shower can be used for several reasons, but in the case of dry skin, this is certainly one of the most powerful weapons out there. Warm or hot water is more likely to dry out your skin. I recommend using lukewarm water for showering or keep it slightly cool if possible. Sure, it’s uncomfortable but it will help preserve the natural moisture of the skin. Any other extreme temp will cause issues.

Proper Post-Cleansing

If you’re not continuing with the proper routine after you shower, then your elbows will remain ashy. That said, you should think about switching up your routine if you’re not drying off and applying moisturizer right after you get out of the shower.

Doing this will likely keep your skin better moisturized, leaving you with smooth elbows. I mean, for as little as 30 seconds you can have better-looking elbows.

Use A Humidifier

If the location in which you live in a really dry climate, then you must invest in a humidifier. This way, you will be able to breathe in air that’s not as dry as the air in your environment. Why does it matter? Well, because your skin will benefit from this. A humidifier should be set up in a room of the house where you spend the most of your time. I typically recommend people use them in their bedrooms. These devices are inexpensive and rather simple to set up these days, so definitely be sure to start shopping for one. Special Treatments

There are specialized treatments which you might want to consider for healing your dry skin. If it were me, I’d start with a solid moisturizer, perhaps one listed on this page even. Best to start to apply it on any of the patches you’ve developed. Do this and within a week or so, you should really start to notice the difference. Eventually, those elbows will be looking good as new!
